A rationale should therefore point to the relevant current variant and market state instead of making a generic parent-product claim. ## Five-part explanation template - Recommendation: name the product, service or plan. - Decisive matches: state two or three requirements or preferences that affected the result. - Verified facts: connect those inputs to current product attributes. - Trade-off: state one meaningful limitation or close alternative. - Change condition: explain what new fact would alter the recommendation. ## Worked Northstar explanation “Northstar Calm Set is the current match because you excluded fragrance, selected a light texture and set a $90 budget. The selected cleanser and moisturizer are marked fragrance-free in the current catalog, the moisturizer uses the lighter gel texture and the bundle total is $84. The trade-off is that this routine has no tinted product. If SSO becomes optional, recalculate the match.” The sentence identifies decisive inputs, verified entitlement facts, the runner-up's failure and a change condition. ## Explanation QA - Can each factual phrase be traced to a current field? - Does the copy distinguish a requirement from a preference? - Is the trade-off meaningful rather than promotional filler? - Does a no-match result explain the unmet constraint? - Does the explanation remain correct when a variant goes out of stock? - Can a reviewer reproduce the result from the stored rule version? - Is uncertainty visible? - Is the language understandable without exposing internal hidden reasoning? NIST's explainable-AI report separates explanation, meaningfulness, explanation accuracy and knowledge limits.
