# Product quiz retakes: a recommendation refresh policy

Decide when to reuse answers, refresh selected inputs, recheck inventory or require a full product-quiz retake.

16 October 2026·Product Quiz Guide

Answer: offer a product-quiz retake when the buyer's needs, product eligibility or decision rules may have materially changed. Store the recommendation's rule version, catalog context and relevant answer time; then choose the smallest honest update: an inventory recheck, a targeted answer refresh or a full retake. Never present an old result as current without a visible freshness rule.

## What is a product quiz retake?

A product quiz retake is a new collection or confirmation of decision-relevant answers used to calculate a recommendation under current rules and product data. It differs from reopening a saved result, which may only re-render the earlier decision record, and from viewing live product details, which can update availability or price without changing the recommendation logic.

This article owns recommendation freshness and refresh policy. The [match-quality QA pack](https://bestproductquiz.com/blog/product-quiz-match-quality-tests) covers deterministic recommendation correctness, the [no-match decision tree](https://bestproductquiz.com/blog/product-quiz-no-match) covers empty eligible sets, and the [explanation template](https://bestproductquiz.com/blog/product-recommendation-explanations) covers the evidence shown with a result.

## Recommendation freshness ledger

Store enough context to decide whether the earlier result can be reused. Do not treat the latest page render as proof that the underlying decision is current.

## Choose the smallest honest refresh

### 1. Live detail recheck

Use this when the recommendation remains valid but a displayed fact can change separately—for example current price, available inventory or a product status. Shopify documents price, inventory, variants, product status and publishing availability as separate product fields, so they should not be collapsed into one undifferentiated freshness flag.

### 2. Inventory-aware reranking

Use this when the recommended item is unavailable but the buyer's constraints remain trustworthy. Re-run the eligible-set and ranking rules against current availability. Keep the earlier answer record, name the changed availability fact and do not silently relax a hard requirement merely to return a substitute.

### 3. Targeted answer refresh

Use this when one or more volatile answers may have changed but durable preferences can still be reused. Show which answers are retained, reopen only the relevant section and let the visitor review the combined record before recalculation.

### 4. Full retake

Require a full retake when the decision purpose changed, multiple inputs are unreliable, the saved answer structure is no longer compatible with current rules, or the consequence of using stale information is too high. Explain the reason before discarding or superseding the earlier state.

## Build the recommendation refresh policy

- Classify each answer. Mark it durable, volatile or event-bound and document the reason.
- Version the decision inputs. Keep a rule version and a catalog or evidence reference with every result.
- Name invalidating events. Define which changes affect eligibility, ranking, explanation or only displayed details.
- Set consequence-based thresholds. A low-risk style preference and a safety-critical requirement should not share a freshness rule.
- Choose the minimum update. Prefer a detail recheck or selected-answer confirmation when it preserves valid work.
- Preserve lineage. Keep the earlier result for audit and comparison while clearly marking the current record.
- Explain the transition. State what changed, which answers were reused and why recalculation is needed.
- Test analytics and recovery. Confirm retries, errors and repeated refreshes do not create duplicate first-time conversions.

## Worked Northstar refresh

Northstar's fragrance preference is treated as durable, while sensitivity status and inventory are volatile. When a recommended cleanser becomes unavailable, the system first reevaluates available variants under the original constraints. It asks for a targeted refresh only if no compatible substitute exists or the stored sensitivity answer has passed the documented confirmation window.

The new result links to the previous result, names the availability change, records the current rule and catalog versions, and preserves the hard fragrance and sensitivity constraints. It does not imply that an unavailable product became unsuitable; it separates availability from match logic.

## Worked Atlas refresh record

Atlas stores team size, required integrations, support requirement and purchase timing with the plan-rule version. When a buyer adds a required integration, the quiz reopens only that requirement section, recalculates plan eligibility under the current matrix and marks the old result superseded.

A price change alone refreshes the displayed price from its current source and does not invent a new answer set. A change to the integration eligibility matrix does trigger recalculation, because it can alter the set of qualifying plans. The explanation identifies the newly required integration as the reason for the changed outcome.

## Retake interface QA

- State why a refresh is recommended before asking the visitor to repeat work.
- Show which answers will be reused and which need confirmation.
- Provide a path back to the saved result when it is still valid.
- Announce recalculation, completion and errors accessibly.
- Never silently relax a hard constraint to produce a result.
- Keep the consent, purpose and retention basis valid for any reused personal data.
- Make comparison, reset and full-retake controls distinct.
- Test keyboard focus after reopening a partial section and after the result changes.

## Measure refreshes without inflating acquisition

Record a stable result identifier, source result, refresh type, reason, rule version and catalog version. Keep first completion separate from later refreshes. If a refreshed flow submits a lead form, Google Analytics documents generate_lead as the recommended event for that submission; product-specific retake and refresh actions can use documented custom events rather than being mislabeled as new leads.

## Limitations

There is no universal retake interval. The right rule depends on product volatility, the consequence of a stale result, consent and retention design, and buyer context. This policy is not a medical, legal or financial suitability framework and does not claim that retakes improve conversion or match accuracy. A freshness policy also cannot compensate for incorrect source data or untested recommendation rules.
