# Product quiz microcopy: a screen-by-screen writing checklist

Write clear entry, question, progress, validation, result and recovery copy with a reusable screen contract and lint pass.

14 October 2026·Product Quiz Guide

Answer: good product-quiz microcopy tells the visitor what decision the quiz helps with, what each question means, how to answer, what happened after an action and what the recommendation can and cannot promise. Write and test the copy as an interface state system—not as a collection of isolated headlines.

## What is product quiz microcopy?

Product quiz microcopy is the task-level language inside the interface: the entry promise, questions, helper text, answer labels, progress, validation, controls, loading states, results and recovery messages. It is distinct from campaign copy because it helps a person understand and complete a specific interaction.

This article owns screen-level writing. Question selection belongs to the [question-planning bank](https://bestproductquiz.com/blog/product-quiz-questions), option-set structure belongs to the [answer-option checklist](https://bestproductquiz.com/blog/product-quiz-answer-options), and explanation evidence belongs to the [recommendation-explanation template](https://bestproductquiz.com/blog/product-recommendation-explanations).

## Screen-by-screen checklist

### Entry

- Name the decision and the useful output.
- State an effort or progress model only when it is measured.
- Do not promise perfect matching, guaranteed outcomes or an unsupported time-to-complete.
- Make the primary action specific: “Build my routine” is clearer than “Start.”

### Question

- Ask one decision at a time.
- Put selection instructions before the answer group or associate them programmatically with it.
- Use the same noun in the prompt, answer options and result explanation.
- Explain technical terms at the point of use.
- Avoid answer labels that overlap or combine multiple meanings.

### Progress and navigation

- Use a real step count when the path length is stable; otherwise describe the current section.
- Label Back and Continue consistently.
- Explain when an answer changes a prior branch.
- Preserve entered data unless the person explicitly resets it.

### Validation and recovery

- Identify the problem and the correction in the same message.
- Move focus or announce status in an accessible way after a failed action.
- Do not blame the visitor.
- Preserve valid answers when one field fails.

### Loading and recommendation

- Describe the current task without claiming intelligence that was not used.
- If catalog or availability data is delayed, say so and offer a safe recovery path.
- Explain the match with answer evidence, current product facts and material trade-offs.
- Label the next action precisely: compare, add, book, email or retake.

## Microcopy lint pass

- Highlight every generic action label such as “Submit,” “Next” or “Click here.”
- Circle each undefined noun, acronym and subjective adjective.
- Compare terminology across entry, question, result and follow-up states.
- Verify every number, timer, availability claim and product attribute against its source.
- Trigger empty, error, loading, no-match and stale-result states.
- Read instructions in DOM order and test status announcements with a keyboard and screen reader.
- Remove claims that do not change a user decision.

## Worked Northstar microcopy set

Northstar's entry says, “Build a compatible three-step routine,” because the output contains three coordinated products. The first prompt asks, “Which concern should this routine prioritize?” and displays “Choose one” before the radio group. The button says, “Continue to sensitivity,” predicting the next topic. If no concern is selected, the message says, “Choose one concern to continue,” and focus moves to the grouped error summary.

The result begins, “Recommended for your primary concern and fragrance preference,” then names the exact answer evidence and current product facts. “Add routine to cart” appears only when all three variants are available; otherwise the action becomes “Review available alternatives.”

## Worked Atlas microcopy set

Atlas uses “Find the eligible plan for your requirements” rather than “Discover your perfect plan.” Required security and integration questions say why they matter. The result separates “meets required controls” from preference-based advantages. If no public plan meets a hard requirement, the page says, “No self-serve plan meets the controls you selected,” and offers a clearly labeled specialist review instead of silently weakening the constraint.

## Limitations

This checklist is not a readability score, accessibility conformance claim or conversion benchmark. Vocabulary, legal disclosures and support paths vary by audience, market and risk. Interface copy cannot repair incorrect recommendation logic or incomplete product data.
